Will Eisner Week at Columbia University

Comic New York at Columbia University -- Columbia's Comic New York Symposium will bring together creators and academics to discuss the intertwined histories of American comics and the town where they were born - New York City.  FREE and Open to the Public, the symposium will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 24th and 25th in Faculty Room of the Low Library.

Will Eisner Week comes to Oregon -- thank you Bridge City Comics, especially Shawna Gore, Diana Schutz, and Michael Ring!

Bridge City Comics hosted the Graphic Novel reading Club where the topic was Last Day in Vietnam, Will Eisner's novel about the Vietnam War. Shawna Gore helped to organize the monthly event.  

Diana Schutz, Will Eisner's Editor at Dark Horse and Adjunct Professor at Portland Community College, began the evening by talking about the reason for the yearly celebration. "Part of the purpose of Will Eisner Week is to keep his memory alive. He was the most important person in comics ever, and his legacy is worth celebrating. He gave so much to the industry, and pioneered so many things." 

The evening continued with discussion about the novel and Will Eisner's other works.  Michael Ring from Bridge City Comics commented, "He was the Steve Jobs of comics. He was there during the game changers and pushed things along."

Will Eisner Week, March 8th

Bridge City Comics will host a special event to commemorate Will Eisner Week, honoring the life and work of the legendary artist and storyteller.
 
WESI_Last_Day_Vietnam.jpgThe event will include a Graphic Novel Reading Club discussion of Eisner's book LAST DAY IN VIET NAM, featuring special guest Diana Schutz, who edited the book for Dark Horse Comics.  The 7:00 PM, March 8th event is part of the Bridge City Graphic Novel Reading Club, which encourages participants to read and discuss notable examples of the best in graphic storytelling.

At Ohio State University, The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum celebrates Will Eisner Week with a special reading from Will Eisner's "A Contract with God."  Join Museum Curator Caitlin McGurk from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in Room 150A of the Thompson Library.

At UMASS Amherst, a FREE screening of the award-winning documentary "Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist" plus two rarely seen short films.  This event will be hosted by Eisner's first Graphic Novel Publisher Denis Kitchen at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 6th in Herter Hall, Room 227.  It's Free, wheelchair accessible and open to the public.

The Toonseum announces as part of Will Eisner Week the opening of "Will Eisner's New York," a rare collection of original works chronicling Will Eisner's informal history of the city that shaped many of his illustrated masterpieces. 
The opening reception for Will Eisner's New York will be held on Will Eisner's birthday, March 6th at 7:00pm. Free for members, $7.00 for others or become a member!
